Welcome to the homepage of the Non-Timber Forest Products and Participatory Forest Management (NTFP-PFM) Research and Development Project, South-West Ethiopia.

This project operates in Sheka, Bench-Maji and Kefa zones of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State (SNNPRS)(see map). Within these zones five woredas with major forest area are the present focus on the work.

Location of the project area

The project aims to contribute to maintaining a forested landscape to support improved livelihoods for the local forest-dependent communities and thereby ensure the delivery of environmental services in a wider, regional and international, context.

This is a second phase of forest-related activities in this part of Ethiopia. The first one focused more specifically on NTFPs and their development. This one focuses more on scaling up that work within a PFM framework and developing forest-based enterprises..

The Project operates in collaboration with departments of the regional state, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community-based organisations (CBOs), and other institutions (e.g cooperatives), as well as with local traders and national companies. It seeks to support an increased, yet sustainable, use of NTFPs within a forested landscape. The sustainable management of forest and land resources is promoted in the light of increased NTFP-production and trading, through technical support and enhancement of the role of forest-dependant households and community-based institutions in the management of the resources.
